F9 Delayed Yet Again

Universal Pictures has postponed the global release of the "Fast & Furious" movie "F9" by one month until June 25, the company said Thursday, the latest change in Hollywood studios seeking to assess when filmgoers return to theaters in large numbers.

The lead star of the film franchise since the beginning, Vin Diesel, took to his Instagram account on Friday and posted a video announcing the release date of the film. Vin has said, "At last!!! Blessed and thankful to you. #F9 #Fastsaga #Fatherhood #Fastsaga."

The "F9" release date indicated that Universal, a Comcast Corp company, is sure of a summer turnaround as coronavirus vaccinations become more readily available in the United States and Canada, which together make up the world's largest film market. Cinemas in New York City, the second-largest film-making area in the United States, are scheduled to open on Friday.

Theater operators, including AMC Entertainment, Cineworld Plc, and Cinemark Holdings Inc, are hoping that they will have blockbuster movies to screen this summer, usually their most lucrative season.

Movie studios do not want to release their most expensive action flicks until they can attract huge audiences to recover production and marketing costs. The next big-budget Hollywood action movie, Walt Disney Co's Marvel movie "Black Widow," is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7th.

The "Fast & Furious" franchise about a street racer community has grown to more than $5 billion in global ticket sales since the first film was released in 2001. "F9," starring Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, was originally scheduled for release in April 2019, but was postponed several times.

Other films currently scheduled for the summer include "Top Gun: Maverick" starring Tom Cruise, and "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" by Marvel, both in July.
